My Trip To Edinburgh And The Fringe

Edinburgh, Scotland

I've been in the hustle and bustle of the city of Edinburgh for the past couple of days to see some of the acts of the Fringe Festival. It was my first time exploring this beautiful city and I had such a great time, not to mention I walked and saw so much, I was absolutely shattered at the end of each day. We (me and the boyfriend) stayed for three days, and I thought I would share some of the photos I took and the places I visited!

Day One

On our first day in Edinburgh, we walked everywhere... until we later realised that the Edinburgh Tram stops right outside our hotel (we carried a huge suitcase through the narrow and overflowing St Princes Street). After we checked in, we headed straight up to the High Street where we saw a few acts perform such as Okinawa Sansan (who were amazing), a blue statued man, a magician and a semi-naked tightroper - yes it was as weird as it sounds. The day consisted of: a visit to St Giles Cathedral (where I saw, in my opinion, the most stunning stained glass that I've seen), taking part in a City of the Dead tour, my first time experiencing the Hard Rock Cafe, a ride on the Festival Wheel (which was waaaay too high for me), and seeing one of my favourite comedians, Stewart Francis (who won the #2 spot of best jokes at the Fringe).

Day Two

Edinburgh, round two! On our second day in Edinburgh we set off early to visit the M.C. Escher exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The exhibition itself was enlightening and it was amazing to learn the history of M.C. Escher himself and to witness his transition from architecture student to graphic printer through his artwork. We finished the exhibition by mid-morning then headed over to the second gallery across the street. I'd studied Roy Lichtenstein's work in school so I was quite excited to see his work in person. We also saw a piece by Picasso who I consider one of my all-time favourite artists, so, naturally I was fangirling a little inside.

I then took on Scott Monument, went on the Edinburgh Sightseeing Bus Tour, visited a gorgeous Italian called Amarone, and visited Camera Obscura & World of Illusions. We were also supposed to go see the comedian Aisling Bea but we were miles away from the venue and absolutely exhausted. So, as any rational human being would do, we went back to the hotel and ordered Domino's! :)

Last Day
Tired and sore from walking so much, on our last day in Edinburgh we decided to take it easy, hopped on the Edinburgh City Tour Bus and headed to the Royal Mile for a little bit of shopping. At this point, we'd ticked off every landmark and experience we wanted to go on, our bank accounts were suffering for it, our feet were aching, and my phone had decided to run out of storage (great!). Nonetheless, the sun was shining and we had a great time looking in all the tourist shops. I think I've seen enough shortbread, tartan and whisky to last a lifetime now. We also went into the Museum of Childhood which was filled with old dolls and teddy's, creepy to say the least.

After having dinner at an Italian called Bella Italia on the Royal Mile, and a huge chocolate ice-cream called "Big Tony", we headed for our suitcases, boarded the tram and sat waiting for our train in the station. We had a mishap with the timing of the train but eventually we were on it and headed home.

In the past three days I have became a hoarder of leaflets, receipts and tickets. It was my first time in Edinburgh, and experiencing the Fringe Festival, and I loved every busy second of it. I'm hoping we can go back again in the near future, I even proposed the idea of Christmas shopping, fingers crossed!
